The most common HID lamps are metal halide (MH) and high pressure sodium (HPS). Both feature long lamp life and can withstand temperature extremes without significant loss of light output. Both sources require time to start up and restrike. Kelvin temperature is 2,000K (a yellowish-white color) for HPS and from 3,000 to 4,100K (a white to blue white color) for MH. Other lamps are available to address specific global markets. Lamp / ballast system performance may vary per manufacturer. Certain metal halide lamps should be enclosed. Consult factory for details.

Temperature Effect on HID Ballast/Component Life
Temperature has a tremendous effect on the life expectancy of a ballast and its related components. Therefore, it is important not to exceed the maximum ambient rating of the fixture. Operating a fixture in environments that are cooler than its rated ambient temperature will greatly increase ballast life. It is generally accepted that for every 13° C drop below the fixture's rated ambient temperature, the life of the ballast doubles. Capacitor life is doubled when ambient temperatures drop 10° C below rating.
